Xavier looked up from ordering room service to find Lydia pacing in the bedroom doorway, her eyes glued to her phone. Her robe still gaped at the neck enough for him to see the breasts he couldn’t wait to get his hands on, especially while he was deep inside her.

Does she like being on top?

He shook his head, trying to keep his focus on why she would pace in the bedroom.

Gripping his towel, he crossed to her. “What’s wrong?”

She handed him her phone. “The stupid tabloids have us as their leading story.”

Xavier’s stomach sank, and dread spread throughout his body as he scrolled through the imaginative article about his and Lydia’s relationship. There were pictures of them partying, stealing drunken kisses, dancing, and laughing together in the VIP section of the club, and the headlining image was of them standing outside the club with her arms wrapped around his neck.

Gods. There was no way he could deny anything between them with all these images plastered over the internet.

He pinched the bridge of his nose as he thought about the fallout from this—what that bitch Julia was going to do.

Xavier didn’t know what he did in his past life to deserve this, but Karma hated him. Julia was going to use this information to sink her claws deeper into his father’s legacy so she didn’t have to relinquish control of the company or the company’s checkbook.

Of course, after all the shit he’d been through, Karma was going to kick him while he was down. The one time he was attracted to a woman since his last fiancée—the one time he’d taken a chance on someone—and this shit happened.

Julia was probably sharpening her knives to sink into his back.

Without a word, he handed Lydia her phone. He kept his other hand clenched around the towel, and he stormed over to the dresser to grab a pair of briefs. Yanking them on, he dumped the towel on the dresser.

“I know this might be awkward, but don’t get worked up about it,” Lydia said to his retreating back as he walked to the other guest room where he kept his suits.

Her bare feet rustled on the carpet, signaling she was following him.

“Ninety percent of the time,” she rambled on, “something juicier comes along and the story dies down. All we need to do is lie low for the next few days, stay out of public, and everyone will move on to something new.”

“Sounds like you’re experienced in these matters,” he bit out. Metal grated on metal as he shoved his suits from one end of the rack to the other.

“Well, yeah. The paparazzi have been following all the families of the founding fathers since we were born. It’s annoying, but you learn to ignore them.”

He scoffed, pulling a suit off the rack and dumping it on the guest bed. “Of course you do.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Annoyance crept into her voice, but he refused to look at her. A muscle in his jaw ticked as he yanked on a shirt.
